* * *

I shoved my hands in my pockets as I walked down the sidewalk, the brisk air hitting my face. I wasn’t even sure if I was headed toward the bar she was going to be at. It was the closest one to the diner, so I took a chance. I was just going to have a drink. To unwind after a stressful day at work. If I happened to run into her then so be it.

The diner closed at ten, so I went to the bar at nine, giving me an hour to get my “I didn’t know you were coming here. What a coincidence,” alibi in check.

I nursed a beer and watched the town barflies flutter around the room, looking for their conquest for the night. I’d been here a few times and every time I’d left alone. By choice. The first time I’d walked in I should have attached a FRESH MEAT sign to my forehead because the girls practically knocked each other over to get a spot next to me at the bar. Maybe some of them just wanted free drinks, but the ones I attracted always wanted a whole lot more.

I knew it was because they knew who I was; my face had been all over the news. Clips of me playing golf would air right before they cut to me the day that Aubrey died. The day that reporters had swarmed the hotel lobby to catch a glimpse of me: poor, brokenhearted boyfriend of the girl that took her own life.

So, the barflies knew who I was. They knew more about me than I wanted anyone to know. It hadn’t mattered at the time that my girlfriend had just died or that I’d left my spot on the PGA tour. My life was in shambles and all they cared about was that I was a professional athlete, former or otherwise. I’d ignored them for the most part, but once, when one of them grabbed a handful of my dick and promised to suck me dry, I decided The Friendly was just a little too friendly for my taste. It had actually been a while since I’d stayed in this place for longer than it took to get my liquor to-go.

“Buy a girl a drink?” a sultry voice asked from my right. I turned to find a very striking brunette sitting beside me. Her lips and eyes were lined with heavy makeup, which made me wonder exactly how striking she was underneath of all of it. Molly’s sweet, fresh face flashed in my mind. She didn’t feel the need to pile on the makeup. She might have tried to build up walls between us but she wasn’t fake about it.

I remembered my mom telling me that I should never trust a girl who wears too much makeup. I think it was her way of steering me away from the wild girls in high school, the ones who started wearing makeup and stuffing their bras at an early age.
